Principal’s Corner

It was wonderful to see so many families at conferences last week.  Thank you to everyone who made a point of stopping by to say hello.  I value the opportunity to connect with parents.  Your experiences with our school are important for me to hear.

This week’s newsletter highlights the incredible work our counselors are doing with your students and a tool called Naviance.

Please watch/listen to this link:

Our counselors created this to share information with you regarding the tool.  You will have some terrific insight that will lead to meaningful conversations with your child/children.  I am proud of our counselors and the work they do for our kids.  Throughout the year, we will continue to highlight and review the Naviance experience.  I think you will find it incredibly helpful.  And, as your child enters high school, it becomes even more critical once the college search and application process begins!  If you have specific questions, your counselors are ready to answer!

Have a great week!

Halloween at MMW

Student Leadership will be hosting Halloween activities on Wednesday, October 31st. Student participation is optional.

Halloween Costume Rules – Students can dress up for Halloween provided their costumes do not have fake blood, masks, weapons of any kind, and aren’t overly scary. Hats are allowed if they are part of the costume.

Advise your student to listen to morning announcements for more information about Halloween activities.

Tips from our Media Center

  1. Common Sense Media #DeviceFreeDinner Take the Common Sense Media #DeviceFreeDinner Challenge »
What would your dinner table be like if it were device free? Our friends at Common Sense Media are inviting families to find out!
Ninety-two percent of parents feel that quality conversations at dinner time are very important for connecting with their kids, yet many worry that devices at the table are taking away from those moments.
Already Device Free? Check out our Conversation Starters and Dinner Games!
  2. If your child is looking for information at home, Minnetonka Public Schools provides a safe place for your kids to search. Through your child can sign into their My Minnetonka account.  Kids will find a variety of Databases including Britannica Image Quest, Britannica School and Gale Informe Académico.  Britannica Image Quest is a safe place for your children to search for high quality images.  Britannica School is an online encyclopedia updated with great articles, images and video.  Gale Informe Académico is a Spanish language resource for students..

Email your school’s media specialist if you have any questions.

National Bullying Prevention Month

October is national bullying prevention month. MMW would like to recognize this by doing a variety of activities. We kicked off our events with “Kindness in Chalk” on October 1st. Students came together to fill our front walkway with positive messages to greet students as they entered the building. We have also started our very own RAKtivist (random acts of kindness activist) club. This club is open to all students and we meet every Monday after school. Contact Heidi DeVaun, student climate para, for more information.

Finally, on October 24, we will be recognizing Unity Day by asking students to wear orange in support of bullying prevention. On this day we will also ask students to sign a pledge against bullying and unite for kindness. Below are some great websites that share resources for parents and students on how to deal with bullying as well as how to be a part of a kindness movement.

From the MMW Health Office for Current 7th Graders

Minnesota law requires children enrolled in school to be immunized against certain diseases or file a legal medical or conscientious exemption.  As your child moves from 6th grade to 7th grade, there are 2 additional immunizations required for school entry in the fall.  Seventh grade students are required to have a current Tdap that has been administered on or after their 7th birthday (but are typically given near their 12th birthday).  Additionally 7th graders are also required to be immunized against meningococcal. If you have been receiving emails from Caredox that is an indicator that your student is non compliant. Even if you have had a CO done in the past, we will need a new one for the two shots required for the 7th grade; Tdap and Meningitis. Ellen Schilling is a notary in our building so if need be, please go to the main office and have this done. Thank you

If you have any questions regarding your child’s immunization status please call the Health Office at (952) 401-5318.
